This will be my first time in participating in the Tucson Audubon Birdathon as well as my teammates. Since moving to Saddlebrooke Ranch in June of 2020, I have been labeled “The Birdman of SBR”. Posting on SBR facebook and SaddleBrooke Ranch’s Nextdoor the birds of SBR on a weekly basis has not only made me aware of the Southeast Arizona birds but peaked the enthusiasm of many of the community residents. Each month I lead a field trip on our wonderful Nature Trail here at SBR.

Tucson Audubon has been a blessing with its zoom classes during this covid time. I have learned much about our Southeast birds, wildlife and flora.

Now is the time for me to thank them by raising funds to support the important work they do and support the mission of Tucson Audubon Society: “Inspiring people to enjoy and protect birds through recreation, education, conservation, and restoration of the environment”. Your support will help fund its many programs.

I am pleased to be joined by SBR residence Birder, Laurie McCoy along with her friend Kathleen Williams and SBR resident Jim Bradford.   We will begin before sunrise on April 29^th, looking or more like listening for owls in the Peppersauce Campgrounds. From there we will head out to the community of Mammoth. Possible stops could include the Wastewater Treatment Ponds, Bar 7 Ranch and maybe even a stop in Dudleyville. From there we may stop in Oracle before head back to SaddleBrooke Ranch for a walk on the Nature trail and a quick look at the pond in front of the Grill.

In the afternoon we will travel west with stops at Marana WWTP, the Redrock Feedlot and finish up in the Santa Cruz Flat Area.

We are honored to help support such a great organization and hope you will join us with your pledges. There are two ways to donate, and no amount is too small to help us achieve our goal of $1,000. You can make a flat donation or what would be more fun make a pledge that challenges us. This type of pledge is only limited by your imagination. You can pledge so much for each species we see or for each photograph of a bird species I take. Or even challenge us more such as an extra amount like $5 for every soaring bird species we see, or every bird species seen floating on water. Just let your imagination run rapid.

I am challenging myself for every picture I get of a bird eating a worm, lizard or other prey, I will donate $10 extra along with the $2 per species we see. We expect to see between 50 and 75 or more. Laurie will also donate $2 per species we see plus $5 for every warbler species.

As an incentive for everyone who make a pledge, no matter the amount, you will receive one of my desks bird calendars for 2022 this fall. And for the person who makes the largest donation you will receive your choice of one of my 18 x 12 MetalPrint photos. Birds have a unique, special, and different meaning to each of us. So, too, is each of our connection with Tucson Audubon Society personal and distinct. During Birdathon, we combine the love of bird watching during spring migration with support for bird conservation.

Birdathoners are birders and social fundraisers, joining together to make a difference for the birds and habitats of Southeast Arizona. Birdathoners continue a tradition that has held strong for over 30 years! 

Each Birdathoner's personal network of supporters is what helps makes Birdathon possible.
