Dick Carlson's and Liz Harrison's AND Jean Smith's Big Day

Birding one day between April 15th and May 7th

Liz and Dick have been leading the Agua Caliente Birdbrains for many years.  Jean has always supported us by adding birds she sees in her yard to our list.  Dick helps out leading the Thursday morning bird walk at Agua Caliente Park and Liz volunteers in the Nature Shop at the park. Like Liz, Jean lives on the north side of Agua Caliente park near the Agua Caliente wash and has a yard that attracts special birds.  Dick's Big Day will begin at 6:00 AM (or earlier).  He will check out the Tanque Verde wash at Wentworth, then head over to Agua Caliente park and then up Catalina Highway stopping at the many birding spots along the hightway and finally head home.    Liz's Big Day will start with her usual morning walk with her dog Sheba in the Isabella Lee Preserve by the Lakes of Castle Rock then she will head home and count all the birds she sees/hears around her yard the entire day.  Jean will add what ever birds she sees in her yard to our count.  Consider pledges such as $5 for each species seen by Dick or $10 for every species seen/heard by Liz.  You could also pledge $10-$20 for any special birid that you hope Dick or Liz will see.  Even just a $25 pledge for the day would be great.  Thanks for supporting Tucson Audubon through Birdathon!

Jean Smith and I did our birdathon for the Agua Caliente Birdbrains Wednesday April 22.  Dick Carlson will be doing his birdathon for the team next week. Liz started her day walking her dog Sheba and birding the Isabella Lee Preserve and the southern most lake at Castle Rock.  She had a very good morning with 30 species, the best birds were a Great Egret up in a tree near the lake, 2 Yellow Warblers near the lake, some Lark Sparrows on the driving range at La Mariposa and 2 Western Kingbirds in the same area.  Driving home Ishe got a Black Throated Sparrow near her mailbox.  During the day she counted the birds around her yard.  It was a slow day but her 2 Hooded Orioles showed up along with her many Broad-billed hummingbirds.  Jean as always had some great birds, 26 species all together.  Her best bird and the best bird of the day was the Golden-crown sparrow which has been visiting her yard for almost a week.  She also had a Lazuli Bunting show up for our count.  In total we got 44 species for the day.  Not bad for not going very far!  I'm sure Dick will out do us with his big day.  Will report his count when he finishes his big day.

Dick had a terrific Birdathon day.  He started at the top of Mt Lemmon, worked his way down then stopped at Agua Caliente park and his home for some lunch.  Afterwards he headed west to Sweetwater Wetlands and Ina Road at the Santa Cruz and then over to Reid park.  He then headed south hoping to stop at Canoa Ranch but it had already closed for the day.  From there he headed over to the Santa Ritas and the Santa Rita Lodge.  His count for the day was 105 species! His favorite spot of the day was the area around Inspiration Rock where he saw 3 Virginia's Warblers and 2 Black-chinned Sparrows.  His very early morning count included 2 Lesser Nighthawks, 4 Mexican Whip-poor-wills, 2 Great-horned owls and 1 Elf Owl.  Thanks Dick for continuing to bird for our team!

So between Dick, Liz and Jean the team had 114 species!

Birds have a unique, special, and different meaning to each of us. So, too, is each of our connection with Tucson Audubon Society personal and distinct. During Birdathon, we combine the love of bird watching during spring migration with support for bird conservation.

Birdathoners are birders and social fundraisers, joining together to make a difference for the birds and habitats of Southeast Arizona. Birdathoners continue a tradition that has held strong for over 30 years!

Each Birdathoner's personal network of supporters is what helps makes Birdathon possible.
