Birdathon is a fundraiser like a walkathon, but instead of walking we count all the bird species we can see within 24 hours.
My Birdathon team is The Valiant Verdins! My teammates are Janine McCabe and Brian Nicholas. We will be doing our Birdathon Big Day in mid to late April. Please support our team with a donation in the amount of your choosing. We are setting an aggressive fundraising target this year so any help is welcome!
Our strategy this year is to keep carbon emissions down by birding within 20 miles of central Tucson (a 20-mile radius from Reid Park). Also, since I am Tucson Audubon's Urban Program Manager, I am using Birdathon this year to highlight the wonderful bird diversity in and immediately around Tucson.
We think we can see well over 100 species by planning out a good route and spending close to 24 hours birding. So if you want to calculate your donation based on an amount per species, you can use 100 as a round number. On Birdathon big days that range over larger areas of southeast Arizona, the upside is that you can visit sites that have species not found within 20 miles of Tucson. The downside is that you loose time driving hours from site to site. We will do more birding and less driving. We hope to see close to every species possible within 20 miles of central Tucson!
We can all work to make our urban area friendlier to native birds (more on the Urban Program at www.tucsonaudubon.org/urban).
Birds have a unique, special, and different meaning to each of us. So too is each of our connection with Tucson Audubon Society personal and distinct. During Birdathon, we combine the love of bird watching during spring migration with support for bird conservation.
Birdathoners are birders and social fundraisers, joining together to make a difference for the birds and habitats of southeast Arizona. Birdathoners continue a tradition that has held strong for over 25 years.
Each Birdathoner's personal network of supporters is what helps makes Birdathon possible.
