We’re the HOAs - Habitat at Home Ornithological Assessors - a Birdathon team powered by Tucson Bird Alliance’s Urban Conservation crew: Kari Hackney, Kim Matsushino, and Olya Weekley!

Our Mission

We’re on a mission to protect and conserve birds where people live! By creating, restoring, and enhancing urban habitats, we’re helping birds thrive in the places we call home.

Why Birdathon Matters to Us

Birdathon isn’t just about counting birds, it’s about telling the story of urban habitat done right.

This April, we’ll be heading into the field to spotlight inspiring examples of bird-friendly spaces, including:

• Mason demonstration gardens showcasing urban and suburban habitat solutions
• El Rio Preserve and Tubac, where we’ve helped remove invasive plants and restore native landscapes
• A celebratory stop at the Santa Rita Lodge feeders (with a well-earned ice cream break!)

What We’ll Be Looking For

As we bird, we’ll also be documenting the little things that make a big difference for birds, including:

• Native plants that provide food and shelter
• Nest boxes for safe breeding
• Bird-safe windows that prevent collisions
• Capped “death pipes” and other hazard fixes

Every bird we see and every habitat feature we highlight tells a story of how we can help wildlife.
