In 2024 I did my Birdathon high up in the northernmost cloud forest in México, in El Cielo Biosphere Preserve, in the state of Tamaulipas. I called it the "Birding in Heaven" Birdathon (Cielo=Heaven). This time I'm going low, way low, to the bottom of Copper Canyon in Chihuahua, México. So this year is my "Birding the Bottom" Birdathon. Barranca del Cobre is Mexico's Grand Canyon. We will be traveling by train from El Fuerte, Sinaloa to Creel, Chihuahua. After a few days birding the rim of the canyon at 8000 feet, we will drop down, way down, to Batopilas at 1500 feet. On our full day birding the bottom, I will keep count of how many different species of birds I see/hear for 24 hours. That's my Birdathon plan.
It's a fundraiser of course!  It's like a walkathon where you count the miles you walk, get pledges per mile, and raise money for a great cause. Except on a Birdathon you count birds. Or to  make it fun, you can challenge me by doing a per species pledge. I'm pledging per species, and adding a special pledge of $25 for any new birds for my Mexico life list or any owl species seen or heard. Give me a challenge!
