The Habitat at Home Ornithological Assessors (HOAs) Birdathon team is comprised of Tucson Audubon's Urban Conservation team- Kari Hackney, Kim Matsushino, Olya Weekley, and Stephanie Kopplin.

Our department mission is to protect and conserve birds by creating, protecting and enhancing habitat in urban areas. Birdathon, for us, is the perfect opportunity to highlight great examples of urban habitat, such as Habitat at Home properties, green stormwater infrastructure, parks, and more.

When we go out, we plan to visit Habitat at Home members' yards, Mason Center, Sweetwater Wetlands, El Rio Preserve, Fort Lowell Park, Santa Cruz River Heritage Site and more!

New this year: Reducing Hazards to Birds!

We will be highlighting every case of hazard prevention we encounter! This includes bird-safe windows, capped death pipes, water escape ramps and active efforts to reduce pesticide use. We will also have materials on hand to close open vertical pipes wherever we see them.

With your donation, you are supporting our efforts to create safe urban habitats by planting native plants, reducing hazards to birds, offering safe nesting opportunities and more!

Thank you!

Suggested pledges:

# of open pipes capped  - Make your pledge go twice as far with this one! An anonymous donor will match up to $300!

# of hazards encountered

# of nestboxes seen

# of bird-safe homes seen

# of cavity-nesters encountered

# of water features encountered

Pledges:

  • Marcia Grand: $10/species and
    • $150 if you get all four (all must be ID’d and actually seen not just heard): snake, lizard, ground squirrel, rabbit
    • $150 if you see a coyote
    • $150 if you see five different types of waterbirds: ducks, cormorants, shore birds, grebes, herons, etc – anything that swims or is comfortable in the water.
