Time again for the Wrenegades to take the field and see how many birds we can see in one day. Been working on our route for a while now, would say more but it’s Double Top Secret. Suffice it to be said that we will be out for some crazy hours, middle of the night hooting, and covering new areas of this part of the state. While a lot of fun, we do see this effort at helping us to track changes in bird populations here, by looking at our best efforts across a number of years now.
I do this to have fun with my colleagues of course, but also to raise money for the Tucson Audubon Society, because I believe in the work it does for environmental conservation and education/outreach. While letting me pretend to still be a scientist, collecting and analyzing data on bird populations in the southwest borderlands, I have also been able to participate in projects ranging from putting webcams in nest boxes to using voice-recognition software to find specific vocalizations amongst hundreds of hours of our sound recordings from the field. In this coming year, I’m hoping to improve our data analyses to determine what is happening with our bird populations. I’m asking you to please contribute towards those goals and thanks so much for joining me in supporting this effort.
