Jim Hoagland
This is our second year participating in the Tucson Audubon Society’s Birdathon. We don’t know how we are going to outperform last years’ experience since we were crowned Grand Champions of the 2021 Birdathon, a truly honor for our first year. With your help we can reach our lofty goal of $5,000.
Since moving to Saddlebrooke Ranch in June 2020, I have been labeled “The Birdman of SBR”. Posting weekly, on SBR Facebook and NEXTDOOR the birds of SBR, has not only made me aware of the Southeast Arizona Birds but piqued the enthusiasm of many of the community residents. Each month I lead a field trip on our wonderful Nature Trail here at SBR.
If you have been on one of my bird surveys walks of the Nature trail at SBR and beyond or enjoyed my postings on SBR Facebook or NEXTDOOR or reading about our nature here in the SaddleBrooke Ranch Roundup in “Nature’s Way”, now is your chance to help me thank Tucson Audubon Society for all the knowledge which has been made available to you.
I am pleased to be joined again by SBR residence Birders, Laurie McCoy and Jim Bradford in doing a “Big Day: Free Style” bird count in which we try to identify as many species as possible in 24 hours. We are excited to add to our team Deb Sandin this year. Unlike last year where we went from Madera to Marana and ended up in SBR, this year we are focused on the birds here in Pinal County. We will begin before sunrise on May 6th, searching out the owls in Peppersauce Canyon.
After our early morning in Peppersauce Canyon, we will travel to Oracle State Park and Oracle City Park before heading up to the Mammoth area to check out the sewer ponds. Then we will go onto Dudleyville area for Gray, Black and Zone-tailed hawk along Aravaipa Road. Depending on what birds’ species we are missing, stops on Willow Spring Road may happen before we finish up here at SaddleBrooke Ranch.
Tucson Audubon Society (TAS) has been a blessing these past two years with zoom classes which have educated us about our Southwest Birds, wildlife and flora. This year again I would like to thank TAS by raising funds to support the important work they do and support the mission of Tucson Audubon Society: “Inspiring people to enjoy and protect birds through recreation, education, conservation, and restoration of the environment”. Your support will help fund its many programs.
We are honored to help support such a great organization and hope you will join us with your pledges. There are two ways to donate, and no amount is too small to help us achieve our goal of $5,000. You can make a flat donation or might be more fun, make a pledge that challenges us. This type of pledge is only limited by your imagination. You can pledge so much for each species we see or for each photograph of a bird species I take. Or even challenge us more such as an extra amount like $5 for every soaring bird species we see, or every bird species seen floating on water. Just let your imagination run rapid.
As an incentive for everyone who makes a pledge of $20 or more you will receive my 2023 desks bird calendar. And for the person who makes the largest donation you will receive your choice of one of my 18 x 12 MetalPrint photos.
We will keep you updated on how our day is going on SBR Facebook and SBR Nextdoor. Thanks to everyone in advance for helping the SBR Cuckoo’s achieve our goal and supporting the work of the TUCSON AUDUBON SOCIETY.
Pledges:
Birds have a unique, special, and different meaning to each of us. So, too, is each of our connection with Tucson Audubon Society personal and distinct. During Birdathon, we combine the love of bird watching during spring migration with support for bird conservation.
Birdathoners are birders and social fundraisers, joining together to make a difference for the birds and habitats of Southeast Arizona. Birdathoners continue a tradition that has held strong for over 30 years!
Each Birdathoner's personal network of supporters is what helps makes Birdathon possible.
Birdathon donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Tucson Audubon Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
